The League of European Research Universities has appointed Professor Kurt Deketelaere as its new Secretary-General during the LERU Rectors’ Assembly at the K.U.Leuven on 17 May 2009. On the 1st of July he will take over the reins from Dr. David Livesey, who will retire after four years of stellar service.

In his capacity as Secretary-General, Deketelaere plans to emphasize the need to maintain or increase the volume, effectiveness and efficiency of public and private investment in research and development (R&D) and in innovation. Neither governments nor industry should reduce their R&D spending as a means of cutting costs during the present economic crisis. On the contrary, investments in R&D and innovation can give a serious boost to sustainable development, job creation and the economy as a whole.

Kurt Deketelaere is full Professor of Environmental and Energy Law at the K.U.Leuven and Honorary Professor of Climate Change Law at the University of Dundee. He was until now Chief of Staff of the Cabinet of Mrs. Hilde Crevits, Minister for Public Works, Energy, Environment and Nature in the Flemish Regional Government of Belgium.

After a latent period, the e-LERU network will get a new impulse after an international agreement was recently concluded between 7 universities, all members of the LERU: universities of Helsinki, Leuven, Heidelberg, Geneva, Zurich, Strasbourg, and the Karolinska Institute.

e-LERU intends to bring a European dimension to teaching, research and reseach-based education in European universities by encouraging them to collaborate, notably through the construction of trans-national combined course structures and the international and virtual mobility of their students within the European Higher Education Area.

As for the next steps, excellent e-lectures will be presented on the new e-LERU website, a special programme for Ph.D will be specified and a meeting will be hosted by the University of Zurich on October 28th-29th, 2009.

A LERU statement on the European Research Council has recently been submitted to the ERC Review Panel. The statement is based on extensive consultation among LERU universities and the Research Policy Committee in particular.

All LERU universities have participated actively in the ERC's first funding rounds and have received, as a group approximately 20% of all grants. It is therefore essential that LERU follows the review process closely and gives it high-level support to help to ensure that the ERC can remain true to its
original mission in the future.
